Biochemical Society Seminar Series: Seminar #2
The Thousand Faces of Voltage-Dependent Anion Channels (VDACs)
Guest Speaker: Dr. Georgios Psakis, University of Huddersfield
Dr. Georgios Psakiss is a lecturer in the department of Biological Sciences at the University of Huddersfield. During his PhD and post-doc, he has studied the structure and the function of bacterial membrane proteins from E.coli and Helicobacter Pylori, the causative agent of stomach ulcer. At the University of Huddersfield, he now focuses on the structural and functional characterisation of native and chemically engineered ion channels using two model proteins with gating activity: 1) OmpG, a bacterial beta barrel protein which he engineers to generate Molecular photo-switches, and 2) a plant mitochondrial beta barel protein, VDAC, whith impact in biotechnology and agricultural research.
This seminar is the 2nd seminar in a series in conjunction with the Biomedical Society Students, Biochemistry Society and Leeds Beckett University which will take place over this academic year. Further information to follow on eventbrite.
