What’s BIODANZA?

The name Biodanza means ‘dance of life’ and is a discipline that uses movement and music to stimulate mental and physical health. Its impact on the wellbeing of individuals who try it is supported by scientific theory and research.

Where did it start?

During the 1960s Rolando Toro, a psychologist and teacher at the University of Santiago Medical School in Chile, started researching the effects of music and movement on human mental and physical health. He developed the Biodanza system which is now taught and practiced around the world and is particularly popular in Latin America, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands.

What are the benefits of Biodanza?

Participants in Biodanza classes report significant improvement in stress levels and a sense of well-being. This has been tested by a German psychologist at the University of Dresden. Dr Marcus Stueck has researched the effects of Biodanza on participants and found significant and long-lasting reduction in stress levels.

Biodanza also works on different levels – it can be seen as a system of self-development that is also enjoyable and fun. All are very welcome to take part, just for the sheer enjoyment of dancing. It is suitable for everyone.

What happens in a class?

A typical Biodanza class normally lasts about an hour and a half and has about twelve to fifteen dances/exercises, with music carefully selected to enhance the exercise and evoke a positive experience. It helps people tap into their innate sense of joy, self-esteem and confidence, creating feelings of wellbeing and connectedness to themselves and others. All exercises are invitations and participants are encouraged to regulate themselves – to participate when they want to, or to take time out at times. There are no steps to learn. The Biodanza facilitator introduces the dance or exercise and explains what to do, then gives a short demonstration, and the participant is then free to move to the music in their own way.

Classes follow a particular pattern: the first half is generally done to lively music with an emphasis on rhythm, then the class slows down to be a more relaxing experience.

"I have been doing Biodanza since 2016. From the very first class, it made me feel healthier, connected and more alive – increasing my zest for life and ability to appreciate and enjoy it.

I’m passionate about Biodanza and keen to share its magic with others. I studied at the London School in Richmond from 2018 onwards to become a Biodanza facilitator and have completed the training. I have run classes with my partner Michael in London, Crete and online and we started weekly classes in Swansea in April 2022. In 2023 we will also be running monthly Saturday sessions in Carmarthen."
