Making a new contract with nature

Twelfth session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), 3 to 8 February 2026, United Kingdom.

The Plenary at its eleventh session accepted with appreciation the offer by the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to host the twelfth session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES 12).

I am pleased to inform you that IPBES 12 will be held from 3 to 8 February 2026. The venue and other practical information will be communicated in the coming weeks

IPBES United Nations Biodiversity COP15 Kanming China conference and IPBES 9th Session Conference in Bonn in July 2022 the recognition that pandemics were caused by mistreatment of animals and encroaching on their habitat - scientists can suddenly explain why it really matters to every human on the planet.

Biodiversity- the big new story Stopping the 6th Ever Mass extinction of species, creating diversity and inclusion in nature.

It is well known that expert opinion points to our maltreatment of nature as the leading cause of most pandemics in history including the current one. However with our renewed industrialisation of food, this time its bigger and different and more deeply engrained in our economics and food and agriculture systems.

Our utter lack of respect of nature has meant we have now managed to wipe out a large percentage of insects and other animals and this presents a real and present danger to us.

How did we do something so catastrophic, how did we not even notice it happening and how on earth can we turn this round and move forward into an age of caring and sharing the planet with our neighbours.

The United Nations is running 2 major conferences this year which will address some of this. The IPBES has issued a number of incredibly important benchmark reports as has the IPCC and the UNFCCC.

. We take you through what they mean and what initiatives are out there to help us through and how you personally can get involved and do something about this, for your own sake and for future generations.

The green economics institute has always taken a lead in warning that this was happening- we are very sad that we were correct - now come and find out how it all works and what you can do.

Dr Susan Canney; Lifelong conservationist and Tedx speaker Susan Canney has a range of experience in the science, policy and practice of conservation. She will be talking to us and answering questions. Topics include the 2030 agendas for biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development.
