Overview

This 1-2 day course or 8-10 hour online covers biosecurity and fish health for entry-level aquaculture staff, gaining a Fish Welfare Cert.

This is a self directed course that students undertake in their own time using our virtual learning environment. You will receive an enrolment form to complete and upon returning this form to us we will send you details of the virtual learning environment.

Who is this course aimed at: This course is aimed at entry-level marine and fresh water husbandry staff, processing staff and support service staff and meets the training requirement of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation's (SSPO) Code of Good Practice for Scottish Finfish Aquaculture (CoGP).

Entry Requirements: None. No prior knowledge of biosecurity or fish health is required. Course Outcomes: Fish Welfare certificate Course Description: The course covers a variety of topics, including: - Biosecurity aspects of the SSPO's Code of Good Practice for Scottish Finfish Aquaculture (CoGP) - Relevant legislation - Record-keeping - Types of diseases, including notifiable diseases - Transmission methods - Stock movement - Area management agreements - Effective cleaning and disinfection. Other Information: This course can be delivered as a half-day taught course at Shetland UHI or elsewhere by arrangement. Alternatively, the course can be completed by self-study through online distance learning using the UHI's ‘Brightspace’ virtual learning environment. The online course is flexible and can be undertaken as and when is convenient to the student on any computer, tablet or smartphone with internet access. The total required study time is normally about 4 to 5 hours and an online assessment must be completed to receive a course certificate.

Online students have 6 months from enrolment to complete the course. Full instructions for online study are provided at enrolment and online students can contact a Shetland UHI tutor for assistance at any stage of the course.

"Login is valid only for one year from time of booking. Candidates failing to complete the course within one year will not be enrolled again unless full fees are paid. It is the responsibility of individual candidate or company training co-ordinator to ensure the course is completed on time"
