About this Event
With natural nesting sites in decline, putting a bird box in your garden can make all the difference, just ask the guys on Autumn Watch!
We've teamed up with Wilder Portsmouth to help out our local birds by running workshops where you can build your very own bird box.
No woodworking experience required, just enthusiam for helping to protect our natural environment.
Birds do not insist on their 'nest sites' being mathematically precise!
What they do require is a nest site which is secure and weatherproof, and as safe as possible from predators.
We will provide all tools and materials.
Wilder Portsmouth is a partnership project between the Southern Co-op and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The focus of this jointly-funded initiative is to encourage people to take action to create and enhance wild spaces where they live.
We want to see more wildlife friendly areas and small outdoor spaces across the city of Portsmouth that are created and supported by the community.
Portsmouth is the second most densely populated city outside of London.
Its green urban spaces are few and far between and because Portsmouth is such a crowded place, gardens are especially important for wildlife. There is potential to create a network of wilder spaces; stepping-stones that allow species to move about and wildlife populations to connect.
We want neighbours to come together and form these links by creating 'Wild Streets.'
COVID secure:
- Location: All activity will take place outdoors at Fort Cumberland
- Small groups: Limited to six participants plus tutor(s)
- Social distancing: Current rules will apply
- Hand sanitiser: Provided
- Refreshments: Please bring your own (none will be provided for safety)
- Fort Cumberland: Not open to the public, access for participants only

- Folding stools: Provided
- Clothing: Wear practical outdoor clothing and footwear please
- Parking: Ample free parking on site
- Access to the Fort: Security desk will have a list of participants' names
- Weather dependent: There is no wet weather contingency, please keep an eye on the forecast and standby - if the workshop is cancelled we will give you a call which could be on the day
