Event description

Description

Our walk follows the Hadrian’s Wall Path westwards passing the Poltross Burn milecastle, one of the best preserved on the wall, before descending to the remains of Willowford Bridge where the Roman Wall crossed the River Irthing and on to Birdoswald Roman Fort.

The return route takes in Gilsland Spa, the Irthing Gorge and the C14th-century Thirlwall Castle before returning to Greenhead, with a welcome cuppa in prospect.

Please dress for changeable weather, wear walking boots or shoes and bring drinks and snacks. If you have not already booked online, please pay on arrival.

Lace up your boots and enjoy a great time outside.

• Duration: 6 hrs
• Distance: 8.5 miles
• Category: Moderate
• Starting point (please meet here approx 10 minutes before the start time): Greenhead Tearooms
• OS Grid Ref: NY 660 654
• Postcode: CA8 7HD

From Newcastle take the A69 west for about 40 miles before turning right to Greenhead. The Tea Room is in the centre of the village. Please park on the roadside. (Hadrian’s Wall Bus stops here).

For those wishing to use GPS/Sat-Nav to find walk start points please note that, particularly in open-country, postcodes cover a large area, so, whilst the postcode will get you to the right general area, you will still need to follow the detailed directions to locate the actual Walk Start Point.
