Event description

Description

Red kites have only recently fought their way back from the brink of extinction and it is still an incredible thing to be able to watch these protected birds here in Yorkshire. This guided tour to watch them above the beautiful Wold’s village of Nunburnholme is run by a truly informative guide. Jack Ashton-Booth is a professional bird watcher and is able to share a wealth of expertise with you. You will travel in shared cars, as Jack points out barn owls, short eared owls, green woodpeckers and other wildlife on the way.

At the site, he will tell you the story of how this colony was formed and show you how these beautiful birds interact. Red kites are unusual birds of prey in the way that they all roost together on winter nights. They are also among the most acrobatic birds of prey and it is a delight to watch their swooping aerial displays before they settle down for the night at their communal roost.

Don't forget to stop in at wildlife artist Robert E Fuller stunning exhibition of wildlife in winter at Thixendale after your walk.

Duration: Two and a half hours

Level: The course is tailored for all levels of ability but is not suitable for children aged under 13. Please note there is some walking uphill on the way back, for about 100 yards, but it may be possible to organise transport if required.

Group size: Places are limited to 12, please book early to avoid disappointment.

Where to meet: Meet at Warter public car park, which is located next to Warter school, ready to travel to the site in shared cars.

What to bring: Binoculars, if you have them.

What to wear: The weather on the Yorkshire Wolds can be very cold at this time of year with biting winds and sub-zero temperatures. Please wear appropriate clothing. Layer up with vests etc beneath a fleece topped with a windproof/waterproof jacket, if possible in muted or dark colours. You can always leave jackets and other layers in the car if it turns out to be warm but please come prepared for arctic conditions. Good footwear is also essential as there will be some walking over uneven and possibly muddy ground. Gloves, a hat, and even a flask containing a warm drink are a good idea!
