Birkbeck's Big Ideas?
A series of thought provoking FREE events, designed to inspire and bring world class Birkbeck academics to the local community
About the Talk
This talk will explore the contemporary phenomenon of ‘honour’-based violence (HBV) in the UK. In the first instance, we will explore definitions and contested notions of ‘honour’-based violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), forced marriage and ‘honour’ killings.
We will then consider the extent of the problem and theoretical explanations including feminist approaches and human rights perspectives. We will finally examine the UK government’s response to HBV by tracing recent developments in public policy and the law.
