Join us for another instalment of Big Ideas at City & Islington College's Centre for Lifelong Learning, and come prepared for interesting discussion and fascinating research!

What is Birkbeck's Big Ideas?

A series of thought provoking FREE events, designed to inspire and bring world class academics from Birkbeck, University of London to the local community, with this latest installment from Dr Stefan Engels, of Birkbeck's Department of Geography.

About the Talk

The Earth is currently warming as a result of human-induced increases in atmospheric greenhouse gasses, and academics argue that the ongoing climate change is so fast and so large that we’ve now entered a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. But how do we know whether the Earth’s climate has changed to a fundamentally new state, and are the ongoing changes really faster and larger than what we consider to be natural variability? In this lecture, Stefan Engels will introduce the audience to the field of palaeoclimatology (reconstruction of past climates), focussing on abrupt climate change during and following the last ice age as seen through the eyes of insects.

Who is Dr Stefan Engels?

Stefan’s research focusses on the reconstruction of past changes in the environment by using biological indicators stored in lake sedimentary archives. He is an expert on abrupt climatic and environmental change across the last glacial/interglacial cycle, and the use of insect remains and pollen as indicators of past ecosystem change.

The event is FREE and open to all, but please note that seating is allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration and refreshments start at 6pm and the talk will commence at 6.15pm. We look forward to welcoming you to this Birkbeck's Big Idea event!
