Description

Join us for another instalment of Big Ideas at City & Islington College's Centre for Lifelong Learning, and come prepared for interesting discussion and fascinating research!

What is Birkbeck's Big Ideas?

A series of thought provoking FREE events, designed to inspire and bring world class Birkbeck academics to the local community, with this latest installment from Dr Iroise Dumontheil, of the Department of Psychological Sciences.

About the Talk

In the last couple of decades, neuroimaging methods have enabled us to explore how the brain changes during the teenage years (adolescence) and relate these changes to the risk-taking, sensitivity to peer influence, self-regulation difficulties and emergence of mental health disorders that can be observed during this time of life.

During this session Dr Dumontheil will introduce the methods used to study the adolescent brain and adolescent behaviour, present recent findings, and discuss the promise of interventions emerging from this research. There will also be an extensive Q&A session to cover topics the audience may be particularly interested in.

Who is Dr Iroise Dumontheil?

Dr Iroise Dumontheil is a Reader in Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Psychological Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London. She obtained a PhD from the University of Paris VI and then was a postdoc in labs in London, Cambridge and Stockholm. Her research focuses on the typical development of social cognition and cognitive control during adolescence and their functioning in adulthood. Her studies combine a variety of methods to study brain and cognitive development including functional and structural neuroimaging, behavioural assessments, and genetics. She is further interested in the potential implications of this neuroscience research for education.

The event is FREE and open to all, but please note that seating is allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration and refreshments start at 6pm and the talk will commence at 6.15pm. We look forward to welcoming you to this Birkbeck's Big Idea event!
