Join us for another instalment of Big Ideas at City & Islington College's Centre for Lifelong Learning, and come prepared for interesting discussion and fascinating research!

What is Birkbeck's Big Ideas?

A series of thought provoking FREE events, designed to inspire and bring world class academics from Birkbeck, University of London to the local community, with this latest installment from Dr Tim Reynolds of Birkbeck's Department of History, Classics and Archaeology.

About the Talk

Neanderthals are often thought to be slow, dim-witted and aggressive. The archaeological and fossil records actually paint a different picture. They are our closest relations in many ways and this includes some cultural aspects. This talk will outline latest discoveries from the Neanderthal burial cave of Shanidar, and ask: were they really the first ‘flower people’?

Who is Tim Reynolds?

Tim Reynolds has worked at Birkbeck since 2003. Before that he was County Archaeologist for Cambridgeshire and also taught for the University of Cambridge Extra-Mural Board (1991 – 2003). He had previously been a lecturer in archaeology at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (1989-90). He has had a lifelong interest in who we are and how we got here and studies human origins and our closest relations - the Neanderthals. He has run excavations in the UK, West Malaysia, Libya and Iraq. He is currently excavating the site of Shanidar in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The event is FREE and open to all, but please note that seating is allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration and refreshments start at 6pm and the talk will commence at 6.15pm. We look forward to welcoming you to this Birkbeck's Big Idea event!
