Event description

Description

Birmingham Museums and Story Lab co-curators present an open evening of performance, micro lectures and discussions around our new co-curated exhibition The Past is Now: Birmingham and the British Empire. The event takes place on Friday 8th December from 6pm – 9pm.

The night begins with music in the Round Room from DJ Chakraman, followed by pop up performances. A panel discussion featuring local and national speakers Peju Oshun, Dr Morgan Dalphinis, co-curator Sumaya Kassim and Malia Bouattia will be lead by Kadian Pow.

The evening will include a musical set from the renowned Affiejam (full band) with micro lectures from Femi Nylander and Dr Fatima Rajiner. Commissioned performance and poetry will also be performed by Danni Ebanks-Ingram, Tapiwa Mugabe and Kokumo Noxid.

The Past is Now has been co-curated alongside Birmingham based graphic designer, Abeera Kamran; poet and producer, Aliyah Hasinah; writer, Mariam Khan; cultural activist, Sara Myers; textile designer, Shaheen Kasmani, writer and researcher Sumaya Kassim. The content challenges the typical colonial narrative used to present the history of the British Empire and seeks to position decolonial narratives within the institution. By focusing on a few key events and themes relating to Birmingham's role in the building of Empire, the exhibition examines the museum’s own bias in telling difficult narratives and explores other perspectives, which have been historically misrepresented.

We would be delighted if you could join us. Please note, until further notice there is a maximum order of 2 tickets per person.
