Session 1: Erin Stellato (SQLSkills) - Updating Statistics Affects Query Performance More Than You Think
Session 2: Chris Adkin - An introduction to column store indexes and batch mode
6.15pm – 6:30pm Meet & Greet
6:30pm - 7:30pm Erin Stellato (SQLSkills) - Updating Statistics Affects Query Performance More Than You Think
Stop me if you've heard this one, "This query is slow, let's update statistics." But what does updating statistics *really* do to your query performance? And is it the right solution? While updating statistics may provide a short-term solution, it can bury the true root cause. If you’re not familiar with what happens to query plans when you update statistics, then don’t miss this session. We’ll set the stage with a review of what statistics are, how the optimizer uses them, and discuss the various ways you can update them. Then we’ll explore what happens to plans when you *do* update statistics, and you’ll see why that might not always be the right long-term solution.
Erin will be joining us from the US via web conference.
7:30pm - 8:00pm Break & Food
8:00pm – 9:00pm Chris Adkin - An introduction to column store indexes and batch mode
An introduction to column store indexes and batch mode, to include the new features that SQL Server 2014 brings to this area and a delve into why column store indexes and batch mode achieves the stunning performance gains in does when compared to row mode.

When & Where
SQLMidlands - Bringing the West Midlands SQL Server community together
We normally hold meetings every other month, usually on a Thursday after work at in the centre of Birmingham. It's an informal gathering of like minded people, with a couple of speakers presenting tips, techniques and information on old, new and upcoming technology. We like to get a mixture of world leading speakers as well as providing an opportunity for our members to present.
We tailor the speakers and sessions to your requests so if you have any specific topics that you want to go through, then come along and let us know.
If you've registered for an event and can no longer make it, please do unregister so that we don't over order the food! To unregister just view your tickets in your EventBrite account, and then cancel the relevant ticket. Thanks!
This event is kindly sponsored by Purple Frog Systems, if you need any Microsoft Business Intelligence help (Data Warehouses, ETL, Cubes, Azure, IoT, etc.), give them a call!
