Event description

Description

Birmingham & the Great War: medicine, trauma, injury will explore the role that the University of Birmingham played during the Great War and the impact that it had on staff and students. It will also more widely explore the impact of injury on servicemen, both during and after the conflict. There will be an opportunity at the end of the event to visit the exhibition at the Rotunda Gallery with the exhibition curators.

The symposium is being held to accompany the exhibition, Beyond the Battlefields: Käthe Buchler’s Photographs of Germany in the Great War, on display at the University of Birmingham (Aston Webb Building), from 20 October 2017 to 14 January 2018.

Beyond the Battlefields focuses on the German amateur photographer Käthe Buchler (1876-1930), whose work forms one of the featured collections of the German Photographic Museum in Braunschweig. This is the first time that her work has been displayed outside Germany. Buchler photographed the German home front during the First World War. Her black & white images feature members of her family and community, wounded soldiers returning from the frontline and the nursing staff who treated them. The photographs are being shown alongside images, documents and objects related to the University of Birmingham’s role as a military hospital from 1914-1918 and the students and staff who were involved in the conflict.

Beyond the Battlefields is a touring exhibition co-organised by the University of Hertfordshire Galleries, Photomuseum Braunschweig and the AHRC funded First World War Engagement Centres at the University of Birmingham (www.voicesofwarandpeace.org) and the University of Hertfordshire (https://everydaylivesinwar.herts.ac.uk). It will tour to the Holden Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan University from 2 February – 1 March 2018 and the University of Hertfordshire Galleries from 15 March – 5 May 2018.
