About this Event

Agenda

Economic session - 8:00 am - 10:00am

  • The global economy has been rocked by the coronavirus outbreak. Will this derail the fragile recovery that was materialising at the end of 2019? Will there be any lasting effects?
  • Domestically, the recent bush fires have also rocked the economy, adding to the drags from consumer sentiment and spending, the ongoing drought, and the residential construction downturn. How long is the soft patch going to continue? Are there any bright spots on the horizon?
  • The worsening outlook has prompted the RBA to restart rate cuts. Are we likely to see further cuts, or the use of quantitative easing? Will the Federal government step in, and if so when?

Construction session - 10:00am - 12:30pm

  • Are there any signs yet of the recovery in the East Coast housing markets feeding through to construction activity? And what will it take for Perth and Darwin to see rebounds in the near term?
  • What factors are continuing to support overseas migration, and what will this mean for dwelling demand at the national level – are commencements going to return to 220,000 pa again? What will the patterns in migration mean for demand for detached houses v. medium and high density dwellings? And which states will be the relative winners/losers?
  • Is the non-residential pipeline still healthy? Which sectors/states are going to be the focus of activity?
  • Will public infrastructure investment continue to rise from its recent trough, and where will activity be focused? And when will we see signs of the long-awaited recovery in mining-related engineering construction?
