  • 14.10 – 15.10 - Satellite Anatomy - Ever wondered what technologies are involved in building and launching a satellite?

Stuart will describe the sub-systems on the myriad satellites that supply us with communications, navigation and weather information on a daily basis. You’re guaranteed to leave this talk as a budding rocket scientist!

About the Speaker:

Dr Stuart Eves has worked in the space industry since 2004, following a 16-year career with the UK MOD.

Stuart has worked on a variety of satellite missions, including Skynet 4, Skynet 5, and TDS-1. The highlight of Stuart’s career to date was the initiation of the TopSat imaging satellite programme, which established a new world record for “resolution per mass of satellite”, and was the subject of a display in the Science Museum in London.

He has been writing on the subject of space security for several years, and is currently the industry chair of the Space Information Exchange (SPIE) forum. He has also recently completed a book entitled Space Traffic Control.

Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in constellation design, and has been a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Astronomical Society for more than 25 years

A light-hearted overview of the materials and methods for producing the various types of solid propellant for weapon systems and the reasons for the choices made.

About the Speaker:

Don Fossey has worked in the defence industry since 1979. Initially as part of the MoD and later in the privatised sector

Don first worked at PERME Waltham Abbey in the P2 composite propellant research group. After a number of site name and ownership changes he found himself working for Royal Ordnance. The site was closed and the group moved to new custom-built facilities on the Summerfield site in 1989 where he progressed over the years to become Chief Chemist for the site which is now part of the Roxel Anglo-French group.

In addition to his research work, he cut his teeth on missile projects such as ‘LAW’ and the Hoopoe motor for the ‘Skyflash’ missile at Waltham Abbey and, while at Summerfield, taking projects such as Rayo (which involved building and commissioning a production site in-country) and ASRAAM (and its successor CAMM) from research through development and into production.

Don retired in 2015 and became a consultant for the Falcon Project which is based at Westcott venture park. He is also a visiting Fellow at Cranfield Defence Academy and a member of the Energetics EAG which advises the MOD on important areas for research
