About this event

The rocks which sit underneath Sunderland have an epic history in deep time of over 300 million years. Clues to this history can be found built into the fabric of the city. This walk will explore where these clues are to be found with a look at the legendary concretionary limestone and other local stones used within the city’s walls. As we explore the city’s rich heritage of fine buildings it will reveal the way that building materials changed over time. This leads to a look at Sunderland’s most recent developments which have a heady mix of national and international building materials intermingled with local stone. All of this will be brought to life with an insight into the way that Sunderland’s rocks formed in tropical seas and the astonishing events that followed. You will never look at Sunderland in the same way again!

This event is offered as part of #LoveSunderlandHeritage fortnight and delivered through Bishopwearmouth Townscape Heritage Scheme, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
