Event description

Description

This year we are taking a pilgrimage back to one of the finest and wave rich areas of the planet.

The magical west coast of Ireland. Brandon Bay and the Mahares Peninsula has long been frequented by hardy Surfers, windsurfers and kiters for decades. The variety of beaches waves and wind directions in the area are second to none combined with the Onset of Autumn storms and swells give rise to some of the best conditions in Europe at this time of the year.

If you havent visited Brandon Bay the comp will give you an additional reason, windsports enthusiasts travel from all over the world to score this spot. This will be our third visit for the comp and should be the best yet.

This Video gives a flavour of the venue from our visit in 2010

Brandon Bay has a collection of amazing breaks from Stradbally, Gowlane, Kilcummin to Dumps, Mossies all providing amazing a varied conditions from cross off to onshore large and small waves.
We have permission to choose and use the best of these beaches for the days conditions and will decide this on a day to day basis according to the weather, tides and wind.

BKC Wavemasters Event Plan

Wind permitting at each event the main focus will be the Wave Competition. If there isn’t enough wind to run the event we will run expression sessions including some strapless freestyle and best wave runs downwind. We will also be surfing and Stand Up Paddling on the no wind days. There is also talk of a long distance race if the conditions are flat on any of the days. Please bring big kites, only having a 9m with you is not an excuse. Ideally for the main event to run we want 18 knots plus, but if the waves are good we may run the event in 12-15kts plus.

There will be the following categories:

Pro Men

Pro Women

Amateur Men/ Women

Senior Men/women - Over 40

Depending on the numbers attending each event there may be changes to these categories, or we may combine categories for heat and timings purposes.

The format for the events will be a Dingle Elimination to allow us time to get through all the heats. If conditions limit time this will switch to a Single Elimination to allow us to complete the event as fully as possible.

First Round heats will consist of either 2, 3 or a maximum of 4 riders depending on the number of riders entering the category.

Entry

Entry is open to all BKSA Members - you will need your membership number handy when you register. We will be running the registration through Event Brite. You will need to PRE REGISTER for each event, THERE WILL BE NO CASH REGISTRATIONS ON THE DAY. This will free up our time to run the competition.

Age Divisions:

Pro Men - Any Age
Amateur Men - Any Age
Senior Men - Over 40
Women - Any Age

Recommended Ability Levels:

All riders should be comfortable and confident riding in waves, dealing with shore break and large swell

Pro Fleet - Advanced Wave Riders
Amateur Men - Wave Riders
Senior Men - Wave Riders
Women - Wave Riders

Prizes

Our aim is to inject as much of the entry fee back into the event as possible, as we are running this on a budget the prize money will depend on the number of entrants and sponsors we can get for each event.

Prize Money will be distributed between Pro Men & Pro Women and a small amount to the Masters.
Between Pro Men & Pro Women this will be distributed equally but will also reflect fleet numbers within this, i.e if there are more Pro Men than Pro Woman their prize money allocation will be weighted accordingly.

Amateur Men/ Women Prizes from the industry and event sponsors

Competition Area

At each location there will be an area for the competitors to rig up their kites on the beach, there will also be a launching area with kite launchers and landers on hand to help you get on the water.

The competition area itself will be marked by two large feather flags on the beach. These will be placed at the waters edge. There will not be buoys on the water marking the area. This will enable us to quickly set up the event and will also mean we won’t be waiting for the rescue craft to move buoys around as the tide changes.

The judges will be placed at the best vantage point to watch the competition unfold for each location.

Start and Finish

Heats shall be started with the following system:

Red Flag Up Warning Beginning of Transitition Red Flag Down Yellow Flag Up 1 Minute To Start Yellow Flag Down Green Flag Up Heat Start

Heats shall be finished with the following system:

Green Flag Down Warning 1 Minute to Heat End Red Flag Up Heat Finishes Begining of Next Transition

Heat and Transition Duration Heat and Transition Duration shall be posted at least 30 minutes before the heat in question on the Official Noticeboard.

Scoring System

You will be judged on waves ridden, airs on the way out will not be scored, airs on the wave and landed on the same wave will be scored.

Judges will be scoring each wave out of ten with the top two waves in each heat counting to your final heat score. The rider with the best combined score from two waves progresses.

Footstraps can be used and as last year the judges will score accordingly, as it is harder to ride without straps a rider without straps will score higher than one with. That rider still needs to demonstrate they can ride a wave though. For example, a rider with straps will beat a rider with no straps if they demonstrate better ability on the wave. However, if both riders are evenly matched the strapless rider will always progress.

Overall Title

The British Kitesurfing Championships are fully endorsed and supported by the BKSA as such the coveted British Title will be up for grabs with the opportunity to win the accolade of the British Champion.

Final Word

The overall feeling and vibe of this tour is positivity, a lot of people are volunteering a huge amount of time and effort into this series behind the scenes. Respect to the organisers, crew, judges and fellow competitors is paramount. Abuse and rudeness will not be tolerated, we are all there to have fun after all.
