About the speaker

During the 1990s, Paul Crooks, a trailblazing family historian, made significant strides in researching Black genealogy. His journey began in London, where he traced his family history back six generations to ancestors who were enslaved on a sugar plantation in North America.

Despite being told that it would be impossible to find records of slave ownership, let alone trace his enslaved ancestors, Paul remained undeterred. He embarked on a remarkable voyage of discovery that took him from suburban North London to North America and eventually back to the Gold Coast.

Paul's groundbreaking research into Black genealogy earned him international recognition through his books, namely "Ancestors" and "A Tree Without Roots - The Guide To Tracing British, African, and Asian Caribbean Ancestry." These publications not only brought him acclaim but also inspired a renewed interest in Black and British ancestry. Furthermore, Paul's work created an entire industry centered around African Caribbean genealogy.
