About

Often it is reported that a reason for lack of successful Doctoral applicants in psychology from Black and Global Majority backgrounds is due to our ‘inability to reflect on our experiences’ (Jobanputra, 2003). This coupled with clashes between personal, social and cultural values (Jobanputra, 2013, Shah 2013) as well as feelings of isolation within the field (Ashraf, 2013) can make the application process daunting and anxiety-provoking for individuals from Black and Global Majority backgrounds. In collaboration with Trainee Educational Psychologists for Cultural Change (TEPICC), this session seeks to provide a support space for 2024 entry applicants on the Doctorate in Educational Psychology from Black and Global Majority backgrounds to enhance their reflective skills and gain tips for managing anxiety ahead of interviews.

Aims

To provide a supportive and reflective space for Doctorate in Educational Psychology applicants from Black and Global Majority backgrounds
To provide applicants with the skills to reflect on clinical, research, professional and personal experiences
To provide applicants with a space to share tips and techniques for interview anxiety management
To connect aspiring Educational Psychologists from Black and Global Majority backgrounds

Attendee criteria:

Tickets are offered for Trainee Educational Psychologist hopefuls who have applied for the 2025 intake and:

been successful in being offered an interview at a UK training provider
and identifies from a Black and Global Majority background

(Black and Global Majority refers to people who are Black, Asian, Arab, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or have been racialised as 'ethnic minorities')

Applicants please be aware that there will be further sessions hosted in February. In the interest of fair access we have staggered the dates to support those with earlier or later interviews.

For all ticket holders, evidence of your interview dates will be required.

Who is able to attend this event?

How will information be kept confidential?

The event is not and will not be recorded. Given the potential for fellow attendees to share sensitive/personal content, we ask that confidence is kept to within those who are attending only. Before we start each session, this will be checked with attendees. We ask that as the event is being held virtually, can we strongly encourage those attending to be mindful of their surroundings.

How many people will be attending?

This event is capped at 8 participants to offer a space that provides the opportunity for everyone to have a chance to contribute and feel more containing for those who may not feel comfortable speaking in larger groups. Two facilitators will also be present.

Is there an expectation to participate?

The event is designed to be interactive so participation is strongly encouraged as all contributions are valued.

What is appropriate to share in this event?

There are no set criteria for what is appropriate to share in this space. The facilitators will guide the discussion and much of this will be shaped by attendees. However, please only share what is within your comfort level and what feels appropriate for you to share.

Can I attend multiple events?

You may only attend one event. This is to ensure that other potential applicants who would like to attend this event can access these spaces.

What if I can’t stay for the full event?

We strongly encourage all attendees to only book a ticket if they are able to stay for the full event. However, should an unforeseen situation arise please contact the event organisers at teppic1@gmail.com who can guide you on what would be the best course of action.

Is there any emotional support available following the event?

We appreciate that the nature of this event is sensitive and may bring up a variety of thoughts and feelings for attendees. We have taken this into consideration and there will be a facilitator who you can privately message within the group if you should need some emotional support. This will be made clear at the start of each session to those attending.
