Black Daughter's very first soft launch empowers Black women (esp. Dark-skinned women) from Pan-African and Caribbean backgrounds in the UK to gain more knowledge of the sustainable and career progressions in technology, design and the environment.
- Ever wanted to learn more about how you can get your foot in the door in tech spaces from Black women already in these sectors?
- Can you imagine curating and documenting virtual realities based on our collective heritage?
- Ever wondered how our data can become culturally sensitive and be used to inform the ways in which we work, live and build together?
- Are you interested in how technology and design can be used for good?
- Are you looking for a career which can be flexible and support you better economically, financially and sustainably?
*This event is exclusively designed and catered for Black Women from Pan-African/Caribbean Backgrounds and is also facilitated by Black Women too.
Day Programme includes:
- Musical Chairs Mixer (Networking) - think speed mentoring, but with music and all about careers, finance, womanhood and the future of innovation.
- Interactive Workshops and Talks - Talks and workshops on how to advance in tech and design spaces.
- Catered Food - Tatale will be preparing summer vibes with a gorgeous courses.
Speakers/Facilitators:
- Angelene Clarke: Coming from an unorthodox architectural background, Angelene is a mum of two with experience in various ventures reflecting different explorations and investigations into space and how it functions. This includes spatial analytics with data visualisation, syntactic methodology, human-spatial configuration. Space Syntax at The Bartlett Space Syntax Lab (UCL) and Infinity Campus.
- Gillean Opoku: UXDi Lead Instructor at General Assembly. Born in Australia and rooted in Ghana, Gillean has worked in design spaces across Sydney and London from start-ups to large corporates and government entities. Really pushing to understand what was, challenging the 'norm' and using human-centred design practices to design better for now and beyond.
- Florence Okoye: A critical service and user experience designer who uses speculative design methodology as a means to make community centred solutions. She is especially interested in questions of afrofuturist and localised understandings of design to create ethical and holistic solutions for complex systems. Her practice ranges from exploring issues around resident owned smart cities and decolonial approaches to museum collection databases.
- Irene Fubara-Manuel: A Brighton-based creative practitioner and academic working in animation, game design, and installation art. They are also a Lecturer in Digital Media Practice at the University of Sussex. Their research interrogates techno-cultures of the border, envisioning alternatives to current migration systems through their creative practice. Irene is currently a JUST AI Visiting Fellow at the Ada Lovelace Institute.
- Nkechi-Vivien Ashiedu: Main focus is advising on CSR innovation within the supply chain for construction and the built environment. Bridging the social gaps for a more inclusive working environment. Nkechi is part of The Gneiss Way team which is an independent, responsible data and project management consultancy helping reshape how businesses within the built environment make a positive impact, one data point at a time.
- Shakirah Akinwale: Supporting Startup and SME businesses achieve sustainability by leveraging their information, and technology and empowering mindsets for change. Shakirah is part of the Gneiss Way team.
- Gloria Osei: Advising on Green Infrastructure for built environment specialists and communities. Professional interests: sustainability engagement, urban planning, and nature-based solutions. Gloria is part of the Gneiss Way team.

Volunteers:
If you'd like free entry and to volunteer on the day, there's also an option in the ticket section for two available spots. You'll need to be available on the day and for one session a week before.
