As part of this year’s Black History celebrations, UNISON Manchester (UNISON Inspire Black Members Forum) is hosting a special event to commemorate Black History, entitled UNRAVELLING THE TRUTH - PART 2.

The event is being held at the West Indian Sports & Social Club, Westwood Street, Moss Side, Manchester M14 4SW on Wednesday, 1 October 2025 and it will run from 2pm to 6pm.

This is an in-person engaging afternoon event with great speakers, performances - including a play, history, inspiration, culture, stalls and lots of community spirit.

As part of this event, there will also be Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN) Health Screening from 1pm to 2pm.

ALL WELCOME and you don’t have to be a union member to attend. Light refreshments will also be available.

Note: There is limited capacity at the venue so booking in advance is essential.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: PROFESSOR AUGUSTINE JOHN, EQUITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE

Gus is a scholar/activist with notable work in education policy; the role of schooling and education in promoting social justice; school improvement; management and international development.

As Area Director of Community Education in Manchester in the early 1980s, Gus introduced a sickle cell screening service, at the Moss Side community education centre and supported the development of sickle cell anaemia research in Manchester. He was named among 100 Great Britons in 2020.

VOCALS: KENEVA O'CONNOR

Keneva O’Connor is a talented performer who shines in various artistic realms. She’s an R&B, Reggae and Gospel artist known for her captivating stage presence. She has performed at events showcasing her soulful voice and versatility, including those organised by CAHN, WOW and The Jamaica Society, Manchester. Keneva also performed at the Miss Caribbean UK 2015 event in Manchester, followed by the finale at the Shaw Theatre in London.

Keneva is a multifaceted artist, entrepreneur and owner of the events company Studio Sachells Events, providing luxurious and bespoke decorations for various celebratory events.
