Black History Month celebration in Midlothian
Wednesday 29 October 2014,
at Dalkeith Arts Centre, 2 White Hart St, Dalkeith EH22 1AE
I would like to invite you to the Black History Month celebration in Midlothian. Black History Month (BHM) has been celebrated in Scotland since 2001. ELREC has been involved with this annual celebration for many years , across Edinburgh and the Lothians . BHM is an opportunity to mark the struggle and successes of Black people of different nationalities and cultures in the past and present . The struggle and triumph of Black people reflect the struggle and triumph of all the peoples of the world. Therefore BHM is a multicultural event and all people are welcome to attend.
To celebrate the initiatives of those whose proposed the concept of BHM, the event aims to promote the contribution of the diverse community in Midlothian : Lessons of the past being used to foster community cohesion.
We are delighted that The Provost of Midlothian has kindly agreed to join the event. Our keynote speaker, Professor Sir Geoff Palmer, first black professor in Scotland, will explore historical links between Scottish history and the history of Black people in the Caribbean. A topic on which he has written a book called The Enlightenment Abolished. Those present will be invited to join in this historical journey from which great lessons of overcoming adversity can be learned. This fascinating history is part of the history of Midlothian where Professor Palmer lives and where good community relations is valued highly by Midlothian Council
There will be multicultural performances including African dancers, live. Major attraction of the event will be a live musical concert by Midlothian based, BBC Scotland musician award winner, the talented Benny Tetteh-Lartey, from Ghana.
This event will be hosted in collaboration with Health in Mind, Midlohtian Peoples Equality Group (MPEG), Midlothian Council and the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) – official organiser of the Black History Month event in Scotland.
Thanks to Councillor Brian Pottinger, diversity champion of Midlothian Council for taking the initiative to stage a BHM event in Midlothian for the first time.
