To celebrate Black History Month, we’re holding a month-long FREE prize draw giving our staff and students the chance to win a book from a list of titles from Black authors.

Naveen Ahmad at Lulu Press explains the importance of including Black authors amongst our reading:

Reading books by Black writers is important in helping us better understand the world around us as well as what it means to be Black. We learn by understanding the richness of human experience and by exposing ourselves to new perspectives. Stories that help break down barriers of inequality, stereotypes, and bias. It’s stories that foster inclusiveness and generate empathy when they are told. When we don’t tell the stories that reflect the diverse identities within our society and omit these experiences, we erase these identities and silence so many voices.

[…]It’s essential that we as readers engage with Black literature beyond narratives of Black struggle. Racism is not the only thing to know about what it means to be Black. “Black Lives Matter” means the whole of Black lives; not just the suffering and persecution. Not just Black deaths and racism. But the joy, sorrows, love, struggles to fit in, triumphs, all of these matter.

At the end of Black History month (on Monday 31st October) we will be drawing a lucky entrant at random to win one of the following titles:

Peaces, Helen Oyeyemi.

Love in Colour, Bolu Babalola.

Black and British, David Olusoga.

Black Tudors, Miranda Kaufmann.

Consumed, Aja Barber.

The Anti-Racist Organisation , Shereen Daniels.

How to enter:

Entries for the prize draw can be made from Monday 3rd October, and will close on Monday 31st October at 5pm. Any entries made after this time will not be included in the draws.

Entrants must provide their staff or student number, full name and University of Liverpool email address in order to verify your staff/student status - entrants which provide a personal email address will not be included in the draws. You may only enter once to allow everyone a fair chance to win. Any duplicate entries will be removed.

Please note, data provided will be used solely for the purpose of drawing the prize draw, your personal information will not be passed on to any third party.

Winners will be drawn at random using a number generator, and will be contacted via email following the draw to be issued with their prize.
