Event description
As part of Black History Month, we’re running events across many of our Eagle Labs to celebrate diversity and innovation.

About this Event

Here in Scotland at Aberdeen and Edinburgh Eagle Labs we want to shine a light on Black Founder inspirational stories highlighting the challenges they face. We want to learn from these stories and encourage a new generation of Black Entrepreneurs.

Our panel members are:

Yekemi Otaru

Yekemi spent the first 6 years of her career in engineering roles before moving into commercial roles such as technical sales and marketing. She's worked for companies like TOTAL E&P, Schlumberger, GE Oil & Gas and Lloyd's Register. In the last 8 years, Yekemi has focused on supporting SMEs in their sales and marketing efforts. She launched YO! Marketing in 2016 and joined forces with Sarah Downs Ltd to create Doqaru in 2018. Her book on social media networks in business reached the top 100 in five categories on Amazon UK when it launched in 2016. Yekemi has gone on to support over 50 companies through YO! Marketing and now Doqaru. Yekemi is passionate about helping energy and technology companies effectively communicate their complex ideas to the market. Yekemi and her Co-Founder were recently Start-up Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists at The Great British Entrepreneur Awards and Doqaru is currently in the Final for Start-up Business of the Year at the FSB Scotland Awards.

Beena Sharma

Beena started out her career in the Oil and Gas industry in 2002 as a Behavioural Safety Specialist where her overseas assignments included Nigeria and Norway. Beena then went on to work across various industries such as Healthcare, Tobacco, Manufacturing, Engineering and Construction. During these roles Beena led multi-cultural and diverse teams to deliver successful implementations of HSE Management Systems. More recently Beena worked on a Scottish climate change project where she developed a passion for contributing towards reducing carbon emissions and eliminating fuel poverty. This passion motivated Beena to create a business that would address some of these important issues. Despite an unprecedented year of uncertainties in early 2020, Beena is now MD and co-founder of Orbis Energy Innovations, an Aberdeen based start-up that focusses on innovative solutions to reducing home energy demand and carbon footprint.
