In celebration of Black History Month, hear from expert speakers about the Windrush generation’s significant contributions to the establishment and development of the National Health Service.

Arriving in Essex on the 22 June 1948, HMT Empire Windrush brought many passengers from the Caribbean and former British colonies, answering calls from Great Britain to help fill post-war workforce shortages in the health service, transport and postal systems.

The National Health Service officially launched just two weeks later on the 5 July, with many Windrush passengers filling vacant NHS positions, including as nursing staff. Often in the face of unconcealed racism and discrimination, these first NHS employees continued in their commitment to provide care for patients and formed a fundamental part of the health service.

Join us for this special event and hear about the historical migration narratives discovered in the Barts Health NHS Trust archives, and a first-hand account of moving to the UK and working for the NHS during this era. Brought to you in partnership with The Migration Museum and St Barts Archives.

Following its extensive refurbishment, this event will be hosted in the newly launched Barts North Wing of St Bartholomew Hospital.
