A very special Open Mic at Dagenham Library starting with drop-in performances at 6.30pm; from 7pm we will also be joined by Asher Senator who will be speaking about his book Smiley and Me and in tribute to Smiley Culture Asher will be playing live some of the memeorable music from the advent of British Reggae.
About the book
In Thatcher’s Britain two music-obsessed teenagers from South London armed only with a microphone and a pocketful of dreams hustle their way to the top of the British reggae & Top Of The Pop charts in the 70s and 80s.
Asher Senator and the late Smiley Culture was at the beginning of the British reggae MC scene.
The book takes you back to the cutthroat music business of the 70s and 80s, when Gabicci, slacks, tank tops, farah slacks, pinstripe suits, Blues party's and sound system was the "in thing" .
