BLACK IS... BLACK AIN'T

1h 27min | Documentary

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZoRIkdoDlQ

The inspiration for Black Is... Black Ain't came to documentary filmmaker Marlon Riggs as he lay in a hospital bed, suffering from AIDS-related complications in 1994. 'It was if the film was rolling before me,' he said, 'and I was just transcribing, I almost couldn't keep up.' In his ultimate film, Riggs speaks to homophobia and sexism within the black community, juxtaposing snippets of misogynistic and anti-gay slurs from popular hip-hop songs alongside interviews with intellectuals including Cornel West, bell hooks and Angela Davis.

The Marlon Riggs Retrospective includes:

Marlon Riggs (3 February 1957- 5 April 1994) was an American filmmaker, poet and gay rights activists. Educated at Harvard, he moved to Oakland, California, where he worked in film production and later taught at U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism.
