The Black Legacies Trail: City of London
Join us for an educational walk through the historic Square Mile, uncovering the hidden legacies of African and Caribbean presence in Britain’s financial heart. The Black Legacies City of London Trail begins at Nero Express, Unit 5, Moorgate Underground Station, City Rd, London EC2Y 9AG—just a short walk from Finsbury Circus and a perfect spot for a quick coffee before we set off.
This trail offers a powerful journey through the City, tracing overlooked contributions and the enduring impact of Black lives across centuries. Starting where colonial wealth shaped the skyline, we’ll pass homes, offices, and landmarks tied to slavery-era finance, abolitionist activism, and civic leadership—culminating at Guildhall, a historic seat of power where both complicity and resistance are etched into the stone.
The City of London, also known as the Square Mile, profited heavily from the transatlantic slave trade. It’s estimated that over a third of London dock investors were involved in slave trading, slave ownership, or the shipping, finance, and insurance of slave-produced goods.
Taking approximately 2 hours, this trail reveals a side of London rarely spoken about—inviting reflection, dialogue, and deeper understanding.
We look forward to walking with you.
