Black British Professionals in STEM and Pride in STEM are proud to present a virtual focused networking event for Black LGBTQ+ people in STEM in the UK. The goal is to have a frank discussion about what it's like being Black and LGBTQ+ in STEM.
The event will feature Dr Craig Poku (he/they), a climate scientist working at the University of Leeds, and Naomi Rowe-Gurney (she/her), a graduate researcher at the University of Leicester studying the atmosphere of ice giants. The evening will be moderated by Historical and Social Volcanologist Dr Jazmin Scarlett (she/her).
These three phenomenal speakers will be discussing their experience in STEM and beyond as well as answering a few questions from the audience. You can submit your question in advance as you book a ticket.
The event is open to everyone, it will be online, and it is expected to last an hour.

STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) seem to have low numbers of out LGBT+ people, both for personal or environmental reasons. By showing that not everyone working in STEM fits the same mould, we hope to challenge the general public’s perceptions of what scientists should be like.It is becoming more and more evident that embracing diversity, in all its forms, is vital for the future of the innovation that science, and the world, relies so heavily upon.
As such, we’re here to share our voice as LGBT+ individuals in STEM who want to show that science is for everyone.
