Description

Marking 30 years of Black History Month in the UK, educators Marcia Steele & Louise Brown of Parents Action & Reource Centre and Kevin Simpson Schools College Liaison Officer of London Metropolitan University will deliver workshops on the importance of building positive racial identity, the role of education in buiding stong community and preparing for university.

All the topics of the workshops were the result of a survey of parents during July to August 2017 that specifically asked parents feedback on the topics they would like discussed and the overall shape of the conference.

The aims of the conference are to:

  1. Build and strengthen the capacity and leadership of youth

  2. Enable parents, educators and youth to network

  3. Provide parents & youth with relevant information, and advice

There will be the following workshops:

Youth workshop I: Employability and leadership

Question to discuss: what is employability and how can we link that to building our community? The need to be in organisation as a part of well-being;

Youth workshop II: employability and preparing for higher education

Questions: how can we make the most out of work placements; how to prepare your personal statements for University /job what help and support is available

Other workshops include:

Building positive racial identity;
Improving educational outcomes;
Employability redefining success for Black youth

Light refreshments available.

Childrens programme donation of £5.00 for two children 3 children donation of £7.00

Louise Brown

is a full-time KS2 teacher at a West London school. She has an interest in Afrocentric praxis and education for social justice. In addtion, she was founder member of the forum for women of the Carbbean and has previously worked with a number of community organisations around campaigns such as stop foreign intervention in Africa and global justice.

Marcia Steele

Marcia holds a degree in Politics from Queen Mary’s College (University of London) and is currently completing a PHD in the Educational Attainment of Looked-After Children. She is a teacher, examiner, lecturer and researcher, who works with the Parents’ Action and Resource Centre, conducting research. Having worked in education for over 25 years - including Saturday Schools, nurseries, primary & secondary schools and colleges - Marcia is passionate about education and tackling the inequalities and barriers present in education. Marcia is the Director of Throw It Out cic – a community interest company that works to tackle racism and discrimination in netball.office@throw-it-out.co.uk

Kevin Simpson

is schools and colleges liaison officer at London Metropolitan University liaising with agencies whose aims are to widen participation and access to higher education. He has conducted many workshops for young people.
