When: Monday evenings, 6.30 - 9pm from the starting date of this listing.

(NOTE - The course starting 27th of April will run over 6 weeks as there will be no session on the Spring Bank Holiday -25th of May)

Required: You will need to bring an exposed roll of film to the first session.

Provided: A negative wallet and 1 pack of photographic paper.

This course teaches the fundamentals of black and white film processing and the basic techniques required to get you printing your own photographs. The aim is for all students on this course to understand and become comfortable in the use of a black and white enlarger and darkroom chemistry.

This course is ideal for those with no experience or those looking for a full refresher. The course takes place on Monday evenings for 5 consecutive weeks from the start date and needs a minimum of 2 people enrolled to run and will run with a maximum of 4.

Course Outline

Week 1 Film processing:

Learn how to process B&W film by hand in our darkroom. We will discuss different film types and chemistry, as well as best practice procedures for film handling. This is the starting point from which you’ll learn to make your own prints in the coming sessions.

Week 2-5 Darkroom printing:

These four sessions will allow participants to learn and really get to grips with printing. John will teach the basic techniques involved in using an enlarger and black and white chemistry, as well as some dodging and burning and other printing techniques to get the most from your negatives.

Note

Due to the nature of the processes involved, sessions need to begin on time to enable students time to put their new skills into practice. Please ensure you arrive promptly for all sessions.

Accessibility

While we aim to enable any who wish to learn how to use the black and white darkroom, Aire Street Darkroom is not currently wheelchair accessible due to the nature of the building and our small unit. While there is a lift from the street to our floor, the light trap inside the darkroom is narrow, the height of the tables and enlarger stations are not adjustable and there are limited accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions regarding accessibility before booking, please get in touch at eyup@airestreetdarkroom.co.uk.

Please note: for safety reasons, we regret that we are currently only able to offer this course to those over the age of 18.
