Description

Black & White Darkroom Introduction - 5 weeks course (£135)

Tutor - John Arnison

John has many years experience as a tutor at what is now Leeds Arts University. Specialising in portrait and landscape photography, John worked at the BBC Television Centre for 10 years before freelancing for various charities and his work has appeared in various publications. A resident of Yorkshire for 20 years, he has produced a large body of work that he has been told 'redefines the English landscape'. He has an MA in Creative Practice from Leeds Arts University and has work in the permanent collections of the V&A, National Portrait Gallery, Cecil House, Friends House London and private collections worldwide.

When: Monday evenings, 6.30 - 9pm from the starting date of this listing.

Required: You will need to bring an exposed roll of film to the first session.

Provided: A negative wallet and 1 pack of photographic paper.

This course teaches the fundamentals of black and white film processing and the basic techniques required to get you printing your own photographs. The aim is for all students on this course to understand and become comfortable in the use of a black and white enlarger and darkroom chemistry.

This course is ideal for those with no experience or those looking for a full refresher. The course takes place on Monday evenings for 5 consecutive weeks from the start date and needs a minimum of 2 people enrolled to run and will run with a maximum of 4.

Course Outline

Week 1 Film processing:

Learn how to process B&W film by hand in our darkroom. We will discuss different film types and chemistry, as well as best practice procedures for film handling. This is the starting point from which you’ll learn to make your own prints in the coming sessions.

Week 2-5 Darkroom printing:

These four sessions will allow participants to learn and really get to grips with printing. John will teach the basic techniques involved in using an enlarger and black and white chemistry, as well as some dodging and burning and other printing techniques to get the most from your negatives.

Accessibility

While we aim to enable any who wish to learn how to use the black and white darkroom, Aire Street Darkroom is not currently wheelchair accessible due to the nature of the building and our small unit. While there is a lift from the street to our floor, the light trap inside the darkroom is narrow, the height of the tables and enlarger stations are not adjustable and there are limited accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions regarding accessibility before booking, please get in touch at eyup@airestreetdarkroom.co.uk.

Please note: for safety reasons, we regret that we are currently only able to offer this course to those over the age of 18.

What happens if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, where we have not met the minimum required bookings). We endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation a full refund will be issued.

Can I get a refund if I need to cancel?

Refunds will only be issued if you cancel 14 days or more before the start of the course. A course cancelled under 14 days from the start date will not be refunded. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.
