Event description

Description

One-day introductory workshop to black and white film processing and printing

This workshop is designed around those who would like to learn the traditional art of black and white film development.

You may already be taking photographs using film, or you may just be thinking about how to get started. Either way we can teach you all you need to know to process your own film and create prints.

About our course

The course will be limited to a maximum of 3 students; each will have their own work station complete with enlarger and all the equipment required to process and print your film.

The day will be a world away from the speed of digital photography; you will learn the skills and have time to practise the techniques, master composition and discover how to get the very best out of your negatives.

FAQs

What kind of film should I use?

Any black and white film from 35mm to 6x7 format is fine. We tend to use Ilford FP4 & HP5 as it is high quality and readily available, however we can process any other make.

What happens if we can't get a print from my film?

We will always try to get a print from your own negatives, but on the off chance there is an issue we have a selection of negatives you can choose to make prints from.

I don't have any pre-exposed film?

We have a small supply of exposed films which you can use during the workshop.

What kind of negatives should I bring?

Any black and white film based negative up to 6 x 7 cm is fine. If you have glass plate negatives please give us a call for advice.

How many negatives can I bring?

Bring a selection with you and we can evaluate which ones are suitable for printing. The age and the condition of the negatives can effect the quality of the final print but we'll work together to get the best possible results.

What kind of camera can I bring?

On the two-day workshop we will be out taking pictures and we will supply a 35mm Olympus camera for you to use. If you have your own 35mm or medium format camera then please feel free to bring it along. If its medium format you may need to consider a tripod as well.

How do I redeem a gift voucher?

All you need to do is drop us an email or call and we will get you booked on a course that suits you. Vouchers will be issued for a specific course but please do chat to us if you like the look of something different. We cannot exchange the voucher for any cash settlement.

What should I wear?

Most importantly wear comfortable footwear as you will spend quite a bit of time on your feet. We supply aprons but the chemicals can stain so please consider wearing older clothes to protect you from drops and splashes.

Is there parking?

Yes we have lots of free parking. Parking is at your own risk and we do not accept responsibility for your vehicle or contents.

Are lunches provided?

Lunch is not included but there are plenty of great places to eat in the local area and we can give you good directions. You can, of course, bring your lunch with you if you would prefer.

Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day.

How many prints will I make?

We can't put a exact number on this one as each course will be slightly different but we expect most participants to make somewhere between two and four 7"x5" prints and one 10"x 8" which we will mount ready for you to frame at home.

Can I order bigger prints?

We do not offer this as part of the regular courses but we are happy to take orders for larger prints. We'll print and send them to you. Please allow around four weeks. Prices will be available on the day.
