The SOAS Latin American Society is thrilled to announce our second event of the Black Lives Matter: Latin America series, 'Blackness and Race in Mexico: A Discussion'.
The event will take the form of a discussion, primarily led by questions pre-prepared by our hosts: the Society's President and our Politics Events Coordinator. We will then open the floor up to a Q&A session.
Speakers include Dr. Mónica Moreno Figueroa and Dr. Abigail Nieves Delgado.
Dr. Mónica Moreno Figueroa is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow in Social Sciences at Downing College, Cambridge. She was born and raised in Mexico. She co-founded the Collective COPERA (Colectivo para Eliminar el Racismo en Mexico) which has been developing a series of initiatives to make racism public in Mexico, visibilise racism in its multiple forms in the country, link academia and activism and incorporate a 'race' perspective in public policy and human rights activism.
Dr. Abigail Nieves Delgado is a postdoctoral researcher at Wageningen University in the Knowledge, Technology, and Innovation Group as part of the ERC research project, Global Epistemologies and Ontologies. Her work focuses on the history and philosophy of ethnobiology in Latin America. Her main objective is to produce a new history of the field written from the South with a critical view on central concepts such as knowledge, traditional, scientific, indigenous, nature and environment, and their connection to scientific methodologies and theories.
The event is open to all, but tickets are limited so get yours soon! To stay up-to-date with our Society's news and events, follow us on social media (@soaslatamsociety).
