Artists Ella Grace and Katie Lyons are coming to Harlow to make Blackout: an immersive musical that puts the Energy debate under the spotlight. And they would like your help!
From Ella and Katie:
We are coming to Harlow to speak to various groups about Energy. Not sure how that’s relevant to you? Well, read on…
Everyday we turn on our tellies, laptops, phones, ipads… we sing along to the radio, take a hot shower, get in our cars and rely on our household appliances to make life that bit easier. And towering above us are the electricity pylons that transport electricity across the National Grid meaning that even homes in the most remote parts of the country have access to electricity. And not too far away is Bradwell nuclear power station, up until 2002 it was putting electricity on the grid to power our homes, while now it is halfway through it’s decommissioning phase.
But do we ever really think about energy? Is it just something that is always there? Is it something we need to worry about? The UK gets around 20% of it’s energy from Nuclear power stations. But lots of them will reach the end of their life span by 2025 (that’s only 8 years away!). Bradwell is currently under assessment to have a new reactor built this could be majority designed and owned by China, a factor some people are opposed to. But energy experts and the government argue that without a new generation of nuclear power stations there will be a shortfall in how much electricity we can make and with not enough supply to meet demand we may end up facing Blackouts. But is that really a bad thing? Who will be effected? And is there an alternative solution?
We want to hear about your own Energy stories. Maybe you know someone who works in the energy industries? Maybe you just really don’t want to be without your phone or wifi connection if there is a Blackout? Maybe you remember the three day weeks in the seventies? Whatever your story we want to hear from you and help us shape some ideas that will inform the content of a musical we are making. We want you to help us workshop these ideas and put the people of Lowestoft into the heart of our story.
See you soon! Ella & Katie
Questions that you'll be discussing may include:
- Do you pay much thought to where your energy comes from?
- What do you feel about the cost of Energy? Are our bills fair?
- Have you ever switched energy provider and if so, why?
- Have you or anyone you know ever been without power and if so how did this affect you/them?
- How do you feel about nuclear energy? Renewables?
- What do you feel about Bradwell Nuclear Power Plant - do you ever think about it?
- Should a new reactor be built at Bradwell?
Choose from one of two focus groups: Saturday 8th April (12.45pm - 2pm) or Sunday 9th April (10.30am - 12.30pm)
A work-in-progress of Blackout will be shown as part of Harlow Playhouse Pay What You Can Season in April (date TBC).
