In 1802 a major development began London's climb to becoming the world's biggest port - the West India Docks was an unprecedented development which saw Poplar blossom to dominate the eastern side of the Tower Hamlets.

Just downriver is Blackwall. An important embarkation point for voyages as far as North America for centuries, it is where the East India Company arrived in 1617 and stayed until it ceased trading.

This tour begins at the heritage-heavy West India Docks, and concludes with the East India Docks and the Thames - gateway to the world beyond Blackwall.

We meet outside The Ledger Building, a JD Wetherspoon pub, and finish approximately two hours later near East India DLR station.
