Event description
Seminar exploring Colour in the Landscape, followed by a tour of the Malverns AONB.

About this Event

Colour is important, for many different and complex reasons, and most of us have to live with colours other people choose. When planning new development, however, deciding which colours to use can sometimes be problematic: ‘The concept of colour is so elusive that it eludes even a majority of designers.’

- Architect, landscape architect and colour consultant Michael Lancaster

This event is an opportunity for landscape architects, architects, planners and landscape managers to learn about the application of colour in the environment through presentations and observations of projects and landscapes within the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), lead by experts in environmental colour assessment and colour design.

Malvern Hills AONB is an ideal location for this topic because of the:

  • ‘Guidance on the Selection and Use of Colour in Development’ publication;
  • Built examples such as the new Colwall Primary School and Three Counties Showground; and
  • The high altitude that enable vistas overlooking the landscape to assess the impacts that colour has on the environment.

The seminar commences at the Colwall Park Hotel with presentations and continues after lunch with a bus tour to observe first hand the many topics raised during the morning session.

The ambition and outcomes of the seminar and tour is to contribute to the Landscape Institute’s development and promotion of landscape-led planning and design and environmental colour assessment procedures to protect, conserve and enhance the natural and built environment for the public benefit.

The speakers include:

Carly Tinkler BA CMLI FRSA

Carly is a chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI), and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). She specialises in landscape, environmental and colour assessment, masterplanning and design, and has done so for over 35 years. Carly is a founder member of the French Colour Federation, and British Ambassador for the Academie de la Couleur (France). The development of her skills in environmental colour of the last 20 years has led to the establishment of Environmental Colour Assessment (ECA) in the UK, and the adoption of colour palettes developed through colour studies as planning guidance.

Jem Waygood

Jem is an artist, designer and colourist, currently specialising in providing guidance on colour and materials for developments within protected landscapes. In recent years he has worked for Malvern Hills AONB, High Weald AONB, Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, developing colour ranges derived from those diverse landscapes to assist in the integration of new developments into the rural environment. He worked on the visual assessment for the new Colwall Primary School and developed the exterior colour scheme. Jem is a member of the AIC (International Colour Association) and has lectured extensively at home and abroad on the subject of environmental colour design.

Nigel Koch MLA

Nigel is a landscape architect with the Herefordshire Council as an advisor on landscape and planning and has 20 years of experience working with international design practices, including Populous and Martha Schwartz Partners, using colour as a conceptual and branding design tool.
