These three workshops are aimed at researchers who are undertaking creative practice as part of their research process, e.g. drama and performance, dance, film, photography, visual art, creative writing, music, etc. There will be an opportunity to present and discuss individual pieces of research practice in the workshops, which will be facilitated by an experienced creative practitioner.

S2a Practice Based Research in the Arts - Dr Lauren Redhead - Tuesday 7th November 2017, 9am-4.45pm. Rooms 9am-10.30am Lg48, then 11-16.45pm AH3.31 Terrace Teaching Space

This session will cover some of the frequently asked questions when beginning a practice research project: what are practice methodologies and how can they be identified? What should be documented, and how? How should practice, process, and praxis be differentiated from each other? What is the role of (complementary) writing in a practice research project? And how can these methodologies be defended against the preference for empirical and ‘objective’ research in the modern university? The session will address examples of projects and methods and allow an open forum for the discussion of specific ideas an approaches. The session is applicable to students in Music, Dance, Drama/Theatre, Creative Writing, Art and Media Practices and Performance although it may be of interest to students of other disciplines as well.
