S1 Research philosophies - Liam Greenslade - Tuesday 30th October 2018, 9am-10.30am

  • distinguish between different ontologies and epistemologies;
  • basic understanding of the difference between qualitative and quantitative methods and mixed methods and
  • where appropriate to use them/how they fit with larger paradigmatic assumptions

S2 Hypothetically Speaking - Dr Peter Watts - Thursday 25th October 2018, 11am-12.30pm

Research is about the production of knowledge: and knowledge, at its most basic, is words about things. As such, an understanding of the nature of the relationship between words and things is central to effective research practice: it impacts directly on many questions of both practical and broader concern to the researcher, such as: what does a robust, researchable / scientific proposition or hypothesis look like; what is knowledge and what are its limits; what is it to be objective; what is science? It is also a highly contentious issue. Drawing on a number of themes and debates from epistemology, philosophy of language, and the history, philosophy and sociology of science, this session will begin to explore the relationship between words and things, with a view to informing research practice.

S3 Foundations of Quantitative Research - Liam Greenslade - Tuesday 6th November 2018, 3-4.30pm
