Publishing in all its forms is undergoing a revolution that even those working in the industry struggle to keep up with. After centuries of working with methods dating back to the days of the Caxton printing press, new technology now seems to be making a nonsense of all the previously accepted routes, rules and legislation surrounding publication. The Leveson report was arguably out of date as soon as it was published, while the massive international best-seller “Fifty Shades of Grey” would almost certainly never have been published in book form had it not hit first the internet. Sandra Hempel, who has worked in publishing for all of her career, offers some reflections on where we are now and where we might be heading.
Sandra Hempel is a former Times journalist and author who has written for a wide range of national newspapers and magazines. Her latest book, The Inheritor's Powder, a Radio 4 Book of the Week, tells the story of an 1833 real-life murder mystery that marked the beginning of the science of forensic toxicology. Her first book, The Medical Detective, which looks at the struggle to understand the great cholera epidemics of the 19th century, won the Tony Thistlethwaite Book Award and the British Medical Association Book Award for the public understanding of science.
