Description

As practitioners we see chronic lifestyle diseases in our clinics all the time. Sometimes we fail to recognise it, and sometimes we recognise it and feel helpless to offer advice.

This one-day workshop will introduce you to and refresh your knowledge of the physiology and pathophysiology of blood sugar dysregulation, including hormonal mechanisms of control, an overview of metabolic syndrome and its consequences, carbohydrate intolerance and metabolic flexibility.

Content will include:

  • Clinical indicators and blood markers of dysregulation
  • The use of 48 hour recall to ascertain glycaemic control
  • The taking of clinical measurements to ascertain risk factors
  • Appropriate intervention strategies for different types of presentation, including macronutrient balance; glycaemic index and glycaemic load; insulin, leptin and the GIT; and meal timings.


Key outcomes

Following the course delegates should:

  • understand the physiological mechanisms at play in how blood sugar is regulated
  • understand how these mechanisms can become dysregulated
  • understand relevant drivers for the predisposition, activation and perpetuation of dysregulation
  • identify patients who may be exhibiting this
  • understand some simple strategies to assist patients in gaining regulatory control again

Please note that this is an introductory level course, and does not furnish attendees with in-depth nutritional prescriptive protocols for overt pathology such as diabetes.


Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for manual therapists with an interest in nutrition and practicing an integrated approach to health. Those who want to be able to offer evidence based interventions that can assist in reversing functional dysregulation prior to the onset of overt pathology will benefit from this workshop.


Who is leading the course?

Antonia Adeniji graduated from the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy (now BCOM) in 1996, and subsequently gained an MSc in Public Health Nutrition from University of London in 2004. She began teaching nutrition at BCOM in 2005, and has led various modules including dietetics, biochemistry and applied natural therapeutics. Comfortably bridging the divide between naturopathy and public health nutrition has been an on-going undertaking that eventually brought her to functional medicine.
