About this event

Science & Tech • Biotech

Over the last year, our Blue Biomass network has been exploring innovative applications for aquatic biomass as multi-functional and near-zero emission building material for architectural elements, investigating how we balance our requirements for building materials, while respecting planetary boundaries.

Cultivated construction using blue biomass (involving micro & macroalgae, mussels and oysters, crustacea or seagrass as starting points), could significantly diversify and increase the total biomass available for sustainable building materials. Our work has shown that this could provide unique integration and regional growth opportunities with the blue bioeconomy through co-products, cascades and residues, while exploring the potential for non-land based cultivation.

During our event at Arup’s gallery we will share outputs from the previous year of international collaboration. We have series of short talks reflecting our sensitive approach to innovation where environmental, technical and social aspects are holistically embedded into material development and design.

The Blue Biomass Network is funded by a Danish Innovation grant. It is led by the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation and includes 3XN/ GXN Architects, the Danish Technical University, Arup, University College London, Queensland University of Technology and University of Queensland.
