Experiment with the magic of indigo with textile artist Deborah Manson.

About this event

To find out how we are staying safe from COVID 19 visit our website here.

Join textile artist Deborah Manson for this new one day course to learn how to make beautiful natural blues and patterns on cloth using indigo and resist technique: Shibori, Japanese folding and tying. ‘Furoshiki’ is the Japanese name for a textile wrapping cloth used to wrap objects and gifts. This course will give you an opportunity to experiment with the magic of indigo and create a series of gift wrapping cloths which can be used over and over again. You’ll learn how to make a simple Indigo vat which you will share with the group over the weekend. Deborah will share her own indigo samples and her passion for natural dye.

This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience.

Most materials and equipment are supplied (including 4 x square muslin cloths per student), although you will need to bring the following along:

Deborah Manson works from her studio in Sussex where she makes textiles and works on paper. Her garden is an extension of the studio where she grows and processes plants for natural dyeing. Her practice engages deeply with the act of making, an exploration of materials and the natural world. Her aesthetic – lo-fi, handmade, imperfect – evolves from her interest in age old craft techniques and the cross overs between art, design and craft. Whether working with paper or cloth she explores colour relationships, placement and composition and the juxtaposition of materials and textures. Deborah studied Visual Communication at Central St Martins and Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art. She exhibits her work in museums and galleries and runs workshops and courses for people of all ages and abilities.

About the courses at Phoenix Art Space

Phoenix Art Space's courses provide a mix of high quality workshops aimed at practicing, and aspiring artists and art lovers. They are suitable for anyone (including beginners unless otherwise stated) who wants to learn new skills from professional artists and would like to meet likeminded people in a supportive and creative environment. We normally provide all the basic materials unless stated in the course descriptions. You need to sign up in advance as some popular courses fill up very quickly.

All courses are aimed at adults (over 18) unless otherwise stated. Course fees are kept as low as possible to encourage everyone to participate in the arts, including those on low incomes but not eligible for benefits, such as many artists. Therefore we do not offer separate concessionary rates for members of the public. We are unable to offer discounted rates for other reasons, for instance if you are unable to attend all the sessions, unless the course has already started and has unfilled spaces.

We accept payments online by credit or debit card and PayPal. Offline payment options are only available when booking a ticket in person at the Phoenix Art Space front desk during gallery opening hours.

We regret we are unable to provide car or bicycle parking facilities (except for students with disabilities).

If you have any additional needs please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate them. We have disabled access on the ground floor where the courses are held, including a ramp and toilet facilities. Please email chloe@phoenixbrighton.org for information.

Booking Terms and Conditions:

Refunds require 2 weeks notice prior to the start of the course and will involve the deduction of our costs such as transaction fees or bank charges. If less than less than 2 weeks notice is given prior to the course start date we regret that refunds or transfers to other courses are NOT possible.

Courses are aimed at over 18s.

If a course is cancelled we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible by sending participants an email. It is rare for us to cancel courses but it occasionally happens due to events beyond our control, in that case we refund the payment in full.

Please ensure you check your email before a class starts as we or the tutor may be in touch with instructions/advice.
