About this event

Canab Cuud is a Somali buraanbur artist, her poetry focuses on themes such as womanhood, history and culture. Buraanbur is often paired with dancing and the synchrony of drums and clapping creating the electric collaborative atmosphere felt in buraanbur circles. Alongside her daughters, Canab Cuud aims to preserve Somali culture by showcasing and teaching buraanbur as a cultural art form created by women, for women.

This October, we’ll be introducing 8 sessions of Buranbur. The program is brought to you by Poplar Union; it’ll include a step by step tutorial on how to do buraanbur dancing to master the art of rhythmic footwork. Throughout the sessions, the team will be incorporating other Somali traditional dances such as Dhaanto and Jaandheer offering a broad range of cultural dances to enjoy. The workshops will also touch up on the historical backgrounds of these dances and why they have been a foundation of Somali culture for centuries

These sessions are beginner friendly and open to all women. Join us for an exciting 8 week journey celebrating heritage, building confidence, and expressing yourself through movement.
