Description

Dr John Speakman, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, trained in medicine at Birmingham, and graduated in 1990. He worked in General Practice initially but in palliative care for the past 18 years. Previously he was Medical Director of Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge, and has worked as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at QEHB since 2006.

Dr Speakman has been Chair of the Pan Birmingham Palliative Care Network and Chair of the West Midlands Expert Advisory Group for Palliative Care, and co-authored the current West Midlands Pallative Care guidelines. His professional interests include; End of life care, Supportive Care, Pain and symptom control, Legal and communication issues around end of life care and DNACPR.

He is also a member of QEHB Clinical Ethics Group and End of life steering group.

Dr Speakman’s talk will include:

  • A history of palliative care and hospices in the UK and how did we get here
  • Palliative care now and in the future….
  • Developments in palliative care to include new drugs, new ways of working and news on ‘ReSPECT ‘ – the new national DNACPR form

This event is intended to be a group talk and discussion, so you are invited to put forward your particular questions, so that the evening can be adapted to suit your needs.

We’ll begin with a buffet at 6.30pm, and commence at 7pm.

The workshop is free to BMA Members, but please consider registration a firm commitment to attend. There are 30 places – first come, first served!
