UNTHINKABLE FESTIVAL + BØMBED BUILDINGS presents HØUSE – A One-Off Immersive Performance at Maister House

Step inside Maister House for a one-off performance of HØUSE, a bold and unrepeatable improvised sound work by experimental composer BØMBED BUILDINGS (Stewart Baxter) and the Eclectic Orchestra.

Created during a residency in the building, HØUSE emerged as a raw, instinctive response to the atmosphere and acoustics of its unique rooms. The piece began with tape loops and guitar experiments with collaborator and engineer Mark Slater in the house’s two-storey hallway, later expanding into a further collaboration with Daniel Thompson and a quartet from the Eclectic Orchestra, who improvised around the original recordings. The result is a deeply personal and immersive composition – ambient yet visceral, orchestral yet fractured – capturing the energy of the space and the emotions it stirred.

“Improvising in Maister House dragged up some dark stuff for me – childhood trauma I didn’t plan on facing. It felt like a purge, almost a brutal therapy session. Months later, I finally listened back and realised how raw and honest it was. The irony of unpacking all that in a grand Georgian mansion wasn’t lost on me.” – Stewart Baxter

Part installation, part live composition, this event will also feature special guests, a screening of a ‘making of’ film by James Cooper, and the launch of a handcrafted vinyl edition. With only 20 copies pressed – each one unique, with B-sides featuring spoken responses from artists including Jehnny Beth, Kate Stables, Chiedu Oraka, and more – the record itself is a piece of art, designed and screen-printed in Hull by Josh Williams using GF Smith card stock.

“Letting this project unfold naturally, without a solid plan, gave it space to find its own path. Passing it to other creatives and collaborators and seeing how they responded was such a blessing. From the music to the mix, the artwork to the vinyl pressing – everyone left their mark and took it where they wanted to take it. There’s something wild and exhilarating about making music and art this way, instead of just pressing ‘upload’ on a digital file and calling it done.” – Stewart Baxter

Curated by DØTE as part of the Unthinkable Film Festival, this is a rare opportunity to experience a work born from, and performed within, the very space that shaped it – a one-night-only collision of sound, place and feeling.
