BME Experiences in UK Higher Education: Social Justice, Inclusion and White Privilege

16:30 Refreshments and networking

16:45 Talk and questions

18:00 End

The University of Birmingham School is excited to welcome Professor Bhopal for our next Rush Hour Research talk. Kalwant Bhopal is Professor of Education and Social Justice and Professorial Research Fellow in the Centre for Research in Race and Education in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham.

This talk will examine inequalities for students from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. It will present recent statistics on the increase in BME students in higher education and argue that despite changes in the study body and significant advances in policy making, BME students continue to experience disadvantages in their access to, and attainment in higher education. The talk will look at why this matters for teachers in UK education, and will explore future policy implications for a socially just and inclusive educational agenda.

Teachers, educators, and policy makers from across the West Midlands are welcome to join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking talk.

Parking

Free parking is available at the front and the back of the University of Birmingham School (Car parks B and C) although as the start time is around the end of the school day, visitors are advised to use public transport where possible. There is also a carpark at Johnson House on the Bristol Road (Carpark A).
