Event description

Description

This excursion will be a rare opportunity to visit Ardveg, Uig, Lewis in the company of Ina Macdonald. Ina is the sister of the late John Macdonald (author of An Trusadh: Memories of Crofting in Ardveg) and was herself born in Ardveg.

Ardveg lies on the south side of Loch Hamnaway, on the west coast of Uig, close to the boundary with Harris. Today, it is uninhabited, remote and difficult to get to. The nearest public road is over ten miles walk and the ground in-between rises to over 1,600'. However, it was not always remote. Until the early 1950s the area was occupied by a vibrant, crofting community.

The journey will take around one hour allowing for several hours ashore and the opportunity to explore the local area.

As dèidh feuchainn air cuairt a chuir air dòigh an uirigh tha sinn toilichte a radh gu bheil sinn a’ faighinn cothrom eile am bliadhna. ‘S e cothrom air leth a seo a bhith cruinneachadh le Ina NicDhomhnaill agus Chrisella Ross ann an Aird Bheag fhein. Ruigeadh ‘s thogadh teaghlach Ina ann an Aird Bheag.

Tha Aird Bheag suidhichte san taobh an Iar den sgire Uig, ach tha an rathad nas fhaisg barrachd air deich mile air falbh. Cha robh Aird Bheag cho iommalach, aig aon àm bha coimhearsnachd croitereachd ann.

Theid an turas faisg air uair a thide, fhad ‘s a tha thu air tìr bith àm gu leor agaibh airson coimhead mun cuairt agus beagan cabadaidh le Ina ‘s Chrisella air na seann laitheann.
