Event description
Join Maya Chowdhry and Sarah Hymas for a Maker Session as part of MIX 2021: Amplified Publishing and create your own immersive experience.

About this event

This zoom-based moving-writing workshop invites you to explore what you understand as home, within the walls of a building, the skin of our body and its latest limb, our mobile phone. We will track our own writing and making processes to encourage you to begin making an immersive experience from an aspect of your home.

At best, capturing and communicating our immersion in a place through the technologies of language, photography and recordings can blur the sense of boundaries between the architectural, biological and technological bodies we inhabit. We hope this workshop will go some way to unpacking some of our processes around the thorny question of how to make embodied work that is digitally framed. How can audio and visual text-based work enter the body of another, and move them to experiencing a place in ways they might not have previously imagined?

Exercises and provocations will invite you to write, explore, and digitally document a space you know intimately to begin your own process of making an immersive experience through your home. While predominantly a practical workshop, we will share questions and challenges we have experienced across the various walk projects we’ve collaborated on, to inspire your own practice.

Our hope is for you to leave with new tools for making new work, perhaps even having started on an immersive experience you would want to guide other people around.

To participate in the workshop you will need:• a quiet space where you live to participate in the workshop

• a mobile phone and a computer

• space on your phone for the app, and video, photos, audio recordings

• to register for a free account with Artivive platform: https://artivive.com/register/

• and download the Artivive app on your phone

The Facilitators

Maya Chowdhry is an artist, poet and activist. She creates immersive and democratic experiences for participants, drawing from creating work in radio, poetry, web, video and Installation. Her current work uses the online space for digital poetry, transmedia storytelling and augmented reality artworks. The themes of her practice interrogate the areas of seed sovereignty, world water scarcity and climate justice. She is currently working on ‘Galvanising Change’ - an interactive audio Installation that uses sensors to explore eco-anxiety - through a residency with Digital Art Studios, Belfast and The British Council.

Sarah Hymas completed a creative-critical literature PhD at Liverpool University in 2019. In it, she researched the marine lyric as a co-worlding of the human and more-than-human. She is now widening that work into autofictive and essay forms. Her writing appears in print, multimedia exhibits, as lyrics, installations, short films, on stage, and as immersive walks. melt (Waterloo Press 2020) creates a poetic reorientation of the ocean as an assemblage of animal, plant, plastic, mineral, technology, human and more. the hispering (BlackSunflowers Poetry, 2021) ripples between eco-poetry, fairy tale, dream and consciousness studies.

This Maker Session is part of MIX 2021: Amplified Publishing. Developed by Bath Spa University, MIX is a four-day virtual conference that explores the intersection of writing and technology, bringing together people to make, think and talk. You can buy a ticket for the conference here.
